Thoroughly enjoyed this book with the ending a bright light for good things to come。 Well written, a King book that I didn't run from because the horror was real life, not crazy town that would give me nightmares。 Thoroughly enjoyed this book with the ending a bright light for good things to come。 Well written, a King book that I didn't run from because the horror was real life, not crazy town that would give me nightmares。 。。。more

It was just GOOD! Wonderful characters and they had a relatable past that the author explored and gave it to the readers enjoyment。 Wonderful back stories。 Long in the tooth (500+) but the back stories filled that void nicely。 Later。 Keep Reading。

I like Stephen King when he isn't invoking magical fantasy。 This was a fun read about a very likable hitman doing his last job before retiring。 Found it to be a page turner and quite entertaining。 I like Stephen King when he isn't invoking magical fantasy。 This was a fun read about a very likable hitman doing his last job before retiring。 Found it to be a page turner and quite entertaining。 。。。more

The first Stephen King book I read was Christine。 I was twelve years old。 It was a LONG time ago。 And Mr King seems to just get better with age。 Not many people can turn a phrase the way he does。 The plot of this book is exactly what I like to read and so well written。 And man, I love it when he calls back to his previous books from forty years ago! I could go on but I won't。 Five Stars。 Recommend。 The first Stephen King book I read was Christine。 I was twelve years old。 It was a LONG time ago。 And Mr King seems to just get better with age。 Not many people can turn a phrase the way he does。 The plot of this book is exactly what I like to read and so well written。 And man, I love it when he calls back to his previous books from forty years ago! A Stephen King novel with barely a hint of the supernatural 。。。 and it was great。 It took me a while to get into this one, a couple of chapters rather than a couple of pages, but it was worth it。 Billy Summers is a hitman with a history, and his 'one last job' requires him to pretend to be a writer, as a cover story。 So, with time on his hands and a story to tell, he starts to write。 And by the end of the book, the end of the book has pretty much been written。 As the 'hit' approached, I realised A Stephen King novel with barely a hint of the supernatural 。。。 and it was great。 It took me a while to get into this one, a couple of chapters rather than a couple of pages, but it was worth it。 Billy Summers is a hitman with a history, and his 'one last job' requires him to pretend to be a writer, as a cover story。 So, with time on his hands and a story to tell, he starts to write。 And by the end of the book, the end of the book has pretty much been written。 As the 'hit' approached, I realised I was only half way through the book, and I wondered what turn the story would take。 And of course, even the best laid plans are subject to the fates, and a chance event changes Billy's life forever。 There are nods to The Stand in this book, mostly in references to locations in that book, but the early King work that is obviously referenced is The Shining。 The Overlook and its maze are long gone, but maybe the ghost of that haunted hotel still remains。 As for the maze, there's a picture in a cabin that reminds me very much of 'The Road Virus Heads North'。 。。。more

This isn't Stephen King's typical horror story its a thriller you could say。 Told from the perspective of an assassin who is a war veteran, Billy is on his last job before retirement。 My favorite parts of the book are as his cover up, Billy pretends to be a writer and he writes about his life which I got caught up in。 But this isn't my favorite book of King's by far which so many readers have claimed。 He's written much better books then this but it is very good。 This isn't Stephen King's typical horror story its a thriller you could say。 Told from the perspective of an assassin who is a war veteran, Billy is on his last job before retirement。 My favorite parts of the book are as his cover up, Billy pretends to be a writer and he writes about his life which I got caught up in。 But this isn't my favorite book of King's by far which so many readers have claimed。 He's written much better books then this but it is very good。 。。。more

The master does not disappoint。 Billy and Alice are worthy additions to the King universe of characters。 An engaging story with an ending that will grab you。 Yeah, OK, there are a few negative Trump references sprinkled throughout, but that's alright by me。 The master does not disappoint。 Billy and Alice are worthy additions to the King universe of characters。 An engaging story with an ending that will grab you。 Yeah, OK, there are a few negative Trump references sprinkled throughout, but that's alright by me。 。。。more

Stephen King continues to amaze me。 He’s written over SIXTY books and still manages to be fresh and relevant, keeping the reader turning the pages well into the night。 Part road story, part tale of redemption, BILLY SUMMERS is one of the best novels I’ve read in the last five years。 A simple but effective plot and great characters。

King's prose here is unmatched。 The autobiography juxtaposed against the waiting game of Billy's Last Job and the inevitable What Could Go Wrong? of the rest is just outstanding。 The pacing is perfect, the characters come to life with perfect clarity, and the action explodes with the dust settling before you know what hit you。 It's King at the top of his game。 King's prose here is unmatched。 The autobiography juxtaposed against the waiting game of Billy's Last Job and the inevitable What Could Go Wrong? of the rest is just outstanding。 The pacing is perfect, the characters come to life with perfect clarity, and the action explodes with the dust settling before you know what hit you。 It's King at the top of his game。 。。。more

I wish I could talk to Mr King in person so I could tell him what a wonderful, glorious author he is。 i always loved most of his books but now he is not just a horror writer but one of the genuinely greatest authors of our time。 The characters in this book are so well thought out and described with such care to make you root for them or wish them dead but you ever, ever wish the book was over in fact I finished the book days ago and yet wish I was reading it still。 Better yet I wish I had just s I wish I could talk to Mr King in person so I could tell him what a wonderful, glorious author he is。 i always loved most of his books but now he is not just a horror writer but one of the genuinely greatest authors of our time。 The characters in this book are so well thought out and described with such care to make you root for them or wish them dead but you ever, ever wish the book was over in fact I finished the book days ago and yet wish I was reading it still。 Better yet I wish I had just started it。 One of your other books that was up there with some of the great authors was 11/22/63。 Masterpiece also。 You can never die or retire because this world needs you in it, writing。 Thank you for entertaining me so well for so long。 。。。more

I enjoyed this one by Stephen King。 I like the ones with supernatural elements in it, but this one had only one tiny, unimportant supernatural thing。 I liked the way Billy's character developed over time, and I liked that some of that development was revealed in the story he was writing and the rest was in his present time activities。 I didn't like the war part of the story, but that's just me; it seemed to be very realistic。 I liked Alice very much too。 She changed as the story went along, and I enjoyed this one by Stephen King。 I like the ones with supernatural elements in it, but this one had only one tiny, unimportant supernatural thing。 I liked the way Billy's character developed over time, and I liked that some of that development was revealed in the story he was writing and the rest was in his present time activities。 I didn't like the war part of the story, but that's just me; it seemed to be very realistic。 I liked Alice very much too。 She changed as the story went along, and I think it was a positive change。 I would recommend this book, especially for people who don't like King's supernatural books。 。。。more

Stephen King Can't miss! He writes this story with such brilliancy。 The shifts between each section is well crafted and each section transports the reader into the lives of Billy Summers(He's lived many)。 He's a hero on several accounts but never accepts it。 His job is too take out bad people, refusing to cause harm to anyone who doesn't deserve it。 Depending on who you ask, they might say Billy is a good guy knowing all that。 But don't get me wrong, Billy's a bad man-and he'll probably agree to Stephen King Can't miss! Billy Summers tells the tale of a hitman named (you guessed it) Billy Summers。 Despite being a man who is a hired killer Billy likes to find morality, even in the darkest of professions。 To do this he only ever takes on contracts for people who are bad; persons who have committed the most heinous of crimes。 As Billy says, 'bad people need to pay a price, and the price must be high'。 He is reluctant to take on one more job as things don't at all feel right, but with the promise of a big payday Bi Billy Summers tells the tale of a hitman named (you guessed it) Billy Summers。 Despite being a man who is a hired killer Billy likes to find morality, even in the darkest of professions。 To do this he only ever takes on contracts for people who are bad; persons who have committed the most heinous of crimes。 As Billy says, 'bad people need to pay a price, and the price must be high'。 He is reluctant to take on one more job as things don't at all feel right, but with the promise of a big payday Billy adopts a new identity as a writer named David Lockridge and finds a lot more than he could bargain for, both in his new found and unexpected love of writing, and in the hit that he can't help but feel uneasy about。That is a basic rundown of the plot although there's far more going on which for spoiler purposes I won't delve further into。 The first half of this book goes by rather steadily。 There are a wealth of characters and even two different personas for the main character。 Stephen King certainly knows the cliché he is writing about here and often mentions it through his character's narration。 This is the classic one last job before I retire story and along with it all the foreboding feelings that something is surely to go wrong。The first half of this book doesn't offer anything particularly new although it certainly catches your attention and that's very important, for there is a deeper narrative within this tale and it's one you feel pressed to uncover。 It's a mystery that has a dozen moving pieces and slowly as you progress each new piece is revealed in front of you。 It's both satisfying and addictive。 King as ever writes his characters very convincingly。 In this book he captures the regret and conflict of his lead protagonist Billy Summers, expertly。 Through Billy's writing you learn deeper of his past and this is further expanded as the pages pass you by。 King also makes you feel rather conflicted yourself。 Despite reading the tales of a hitman, you also see the compassion of a person who is trying to do good by doing wrong。 Billy isn't so much an evil person but he is a bad one, instilling justice through his own means and his own determination of guilt。 He is the classic vigilante。 You know he's acting outside of the law and you know deep down inside the world would not work if everyone took justice into their own hands, but you still have to admire Billy's dedication to do what he thinks is right。 It's a moral conflict and one Stephen King is certainly aware of。 The emotional depth to Billy and his display of intelligence strongly suggests Billy is aware too, but far gone to do anything about it。 Billy knows a storm is coming, but he can't stop himself and is intently driven to avenge those who have wronged him and anyone close to him。This is not a classic Stephen King book。 I must make any potential readers aware。 For me this is slightly disappointing, but in no way a critique。 I love Stephen King where the weird and mysterious is at play but aside from one minor reference, you won't find that in this work。 While this may not be to every fan's taste, it in no way discredits the achievement in this book。 King does seem to be leaning more and more to crime thrillers in his later years and while he may not bring about the same level of horror and creepiness he is known for, what certainly isn't lost is his ability to write a compelling and gripping tale, married with characters that are deep and complex。 They are with you all the way, through good and bad, happiness and despair。 It's a feeling few authors can create and despite my doubt at the start of this tale I was quickly silenced and left to experience a wealth of emotion, this ever reminding me of why it is I read in the first place。 。。。more
